This week, Ms. Dvorsky read The Lonely Book to 1st-5th grade classes. The story is about a new book in the library that is loved by all, checked out constantly, and rarely spends a night on the library shelf. Over time, it is forgotten and sits on the shelf waiting to be discovered, and eventually winds up in dark basement of the library, before it is re-discovered. Students identified with the story, because they are often on the hunt for the newest titles, and now have realized there could be something just as great sitting on the shelf waiting to be found! Starting next week, there will be slips tucked into "lonely books" of our library. If a student comes across a slip while reading a "lonely book," there will be a reward and they will even be featured on a Wall of Fame with a book recommendation. This project has already had an impact! Even though the slips won't appear in the books until next week, students have already started hunting for "lonely books." Things I overheard today... "This looks like it could be lonely." "Can you show me some books that haven't been checked out in a while." and even..."Give me an old book with a good story." As you can see, our 5th grade boys were inspired by the message!
