I was so excited when Mrs. Wheatley approached me with this idea! Her group of 5th graders made a bobsled track out of PVC pipe and filled their "sleds" of glass test tubes with different materials to give them different weights. They made predictions on which sleds would perform the fastest runs. They also attempted to create a stopwatch mechanism using a makey-makey and the scratch program. After performing multiple trials they will now average the times and determine which sled takes the gold!

Second grade was up for the challenge.
Kindergarten
We read two fairy tales this week; the traditional Princess and the Pea, and then the same story told from the pea's perspective called The Very Smart Pea and the Princess-to-Be. From there, we went into the lab to see on which "peas" would it be the most difficult to stack "mattresses." Our peas took the form of different size Legos and we used our Keva Planks as mattresses. The students recorded their results in a chart to share! As you may have heard, we have begun a Whole School Read with the theme immigration. We are using books with this theme as class read alouds, so that the whole school has a common understanding of immigration, we are able to discuss it, learn about it, and build a sense of community. As part of this Whole School Read, our 4th and 5th graders went Facets Theater in Lincoln Park to view a series of short films. Prior to attending we did some preparation learning different vocabulary people use when speaking about film, practiced using subtitles, and set a goal for viewing. The films were shown in several different languages, some were animated, some were live-action, but all had an important message about immigration. After the films, we were led in a discussion by the Facets staff, where we shared our thoughts and what we learned. It was an excellent experience for both students and staff! Marley Dias is a 13-year-old girl with big ideas and a big heart. She's also an author, public speaker, and on the Forbes list "30 Under 30." Dias found herself getting frustrated at the lack of books with characters who were like herself. She decided that she would set a goal to collect 1,000 books with black girl characters to donate to libraries. The #1000BlackGirlBooks had begun. She has surpassed that goal 10-fold and is still going! She has collected over 11,000 books and donated them to libraries. She has recently released a book called Marley Dias Gets It Done and So Can You! Here are is a video of Marley telling you more about her role as activist and author! Our 5th graders had a few minutes to spare after Battle of the Books to read to one of our Kindergarten classes! We have to be sure to make more time for this...loved by all!
District Battle of the Books Competition! We could not be more proud of That One Group that Has Potatoes! After competing at the school level, this team went on to battle the winning teams from Highland and Stenson Schools. It was an intense but friendly competition and came down to the very last question! A real nail-biter! Way to go POTATOES!
Today was the day our Battle of the Books students put themselves to the test. Teams were formed, books were read, discussions were had, and today was the day they had been waiting for! It came down to two teams; The Cupcake Unicorn Girls and The One Group that Has Potatoes. It was a close match watched by 4th and 5th grades and The Group that Has Potatoes came out on top. Congratulations to ALL of the teams who read and competed today! You make us proud!
