Kindergarten began learning about engineering last week. We started by watching a BrainPop video, where Annie and Moby taught us what it means to be an engineer. In the video, Annie and Moby discovered a real life problem...the squirrels were eating all the birdseed from the bird feeder. They brainstormed possible solutions together, drew out their plan, and built it. Their first try did not work, so they tried to improve on that idea! They finally figured out how to stop the pesky squirrels!
After watching the video, we read the book Rosie Revere, Engineer, about a girl with a knack for turning ordinary things into wonderful inventions. Her 'gizmos' often flopped, but we learned that those kinds of mistakes can be celebrated because now you've learned what doesn't work and can try something different! The following week, we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We followed what an engineer would do...1) identified the problem, 2) brainstormed solutions, 3) drew out a plan, and 4) built it! They built surf boards and soft shoes for the goats, headphones for the troll, and even boats, rockets, and new bridges! Our Kindergarten did a wonderful job engineering in our D-Lab!

Our 4th and 5th graders needed a refresher on how to locate books in our library, so Ms. Dvorsky set up a super fun scavenger hunt for them to polish their skills!
After many week of reading all the Monarch Award nominees, our 1st-3rd graders voted on the book they thought was the most deserving of the award. The results from our school were close between Bob, Not Bob! and A Creepy Pair of Underwear. When the Illinois State results came in, A Creepy Pair of Underwear prevailed! After observing the crimes scene, watching interviews throughout the week, and keeping eyes and eyes open for clues around school...the book drop mystery has been solved! It was one big misunderstanding! Watch the video on the Library Mystery tab to find out what really happened!
Devonshire Students...we need your help. The book drop is used on a daily basis to help us collect and re-circulate books. Where could it have gone? Who would want to take it...and why?! Please go to the Library Mystery Tab at the top of this page for more information!
