Last week, students in grades 3-5 all did the same Keva Challenge. Build the tallest structure you can with ONLY TEN Keva planks. Students worked together, discussed ideas, built, and built again to improve their design. The champ at the end of the week were 5th graders Umaira and Maddy with 28.5 inches. Way to go!

Typically, fiction books are organized by author. That works for our intermediate students who are able to use the online catalog, have learned library skills, and practiced locating books in the school library, but what about our youngest students?
It was time for a change. We re-organized our picture book section by category! What a difference it has made in their independence browsing for books, and making choices about what they are going to read. There are category pictures on the windows above each shelving section that tell the students what they can find below. On each book below, there is a corresponding sticker of that category. In other words, if you'd like to read a story that has a dog in it, look for the picture of a dog on the window above...below it look for the shelf label and books with that same picture of a dog! We're loving it! After reading Iggy Peck Architect, our 2nd graders got into the Keva plank challenges! The first challenge was to build the tallest structure possible with 10 blocks. The second challenge was to build the tallest structure possible with only one block touching the ground. They rose to the challenges and even better did it with sharing, kind words, cooperating, and communication, which was the shared expectation. Well done!
