Typically, fiction books are organized by author. That works for our intermediate students who are able to use the online catalog, have learned library skills, and practiced locating books in the school library, but what about our youngest students?
It was time for a change. We re-organized our picture book section by category! What a difference it has made in their independence browsing for books, and making choices about what they are going to read. There are category pictures on the windows above each shelving section that tell the students what they can find below. On each book below, there is a corresponding sticker of that category. In other words, if you'd like to read a story that has a dog in it, look for the picture of a dog on the window above...below it look for the shelf label and books with that same picture of a dog! We're loving it!
