Our second graders have worked VERY hard in their classrooms reading, researching, writing and illustrating books of informational text. There are a wide variety of topics! From Star Wars and Harry Potter to training dogs and seasons. Each book contains a table of contents, several chapters, a glossary, an author's note, and of course beautiful illustrations. After all of their hard work, we thought it would be nice to have the students read their books while showing the illustrations using the green screen in Area 68. Parents can see these readings on their students' Seesaw accounts soon! Here are some snapshots!
Mr. Allen's third graders have been learning about area and perimeter in their classroom. They were challenged to think of a new layout for the lunchroom, otherwise known as the Dolphin Diner, to maximize seating and needs of the students. When learning about area and perimeter, the tables served as the units for area, and the seats served as the units for perimeter. Students worked in partners to come up with multiple designs and lay-outs. After choosing the best of their plans, each set of partners came up to the lab to code the Dash and Dot robots to draw their layout. We attached the markers to the robots with Legos, did some measuring along with some math operations to figure out what ratio to use when transferring their design from small grid paper to large chart paper. We measured, discussed, and determined multiplying by ten was the best method. Some designs were more challenging then others with longer strings of code, while others were able to modify one code to create another. In the end every group completed the coding to have the Dash robot draw on the large chart paper to look just like their original grid paper plan! Math, teamwork, coding... and of course lots of fun! Mrs. Uhle's Class 4th grade class has been learning about different fraction concepts in their classroom. They headed up to Area 68 to learn about the stop motion app called Koma Koma in order to demonstrate the fraction concepts they learned. Once they learned the different functions of the app, they were put with a partner to discuss and plan what concepts they wanted to show, what materials they would use, and the important stages of images they would show.
