Kindergarten is reading and learning about various fairytales. We identified the important elements of the stories, including character, setting, problem, and solution. Considering the problems of these tales is what really got us thinking! As a class, we brainstormed ideas to quiet the ‘trip-trap’ in the Three Billy Goats Gruff tale. Our kindergarteners proved they were real-problem solvers with some of their ideas! Making troll ear-muffs and billy goat slippers were just some of many wonderful solutions! We then got into groups to take on more fairy tale problems. Now, it was up to kindergarten groups to build a house that the wolf could NOT blow down. They brainstormed ideas with their group, combined their ideas into one plan, drew the plan, and tried their best to bring the plan to life! The challenge was...they did not have bricks like our well-known third pig! They only had straws, craft sticks, cardboard, tape, and marshmallows...yes marshmallows. Our big bad wolf came out the last day to test the structure of the houses. Some of the important things we learned throughout this process… how to work together toward one goal, building is not always easy, sometimes we need to makes changes to a plan to be successful, we are ALL great thinkers and problem-solvers, and there are many ways to solve a problem!
