The panel of administrators, teachers, and staff have been anxiously awaiting the garden proposal for weeks. The students in Mrs. Peterson's class have been researching, reading, writing, measuring, gathering data, and face-timing to determine the best way to design an indoor garden. The big day had come to present their proposal to Dr. Garwood, Mr. Schmeisser, Mr. Aboytes, Mrs. Gerage, Mrs. Rolando, and myself. It was a HUGE success! Their plan is to collect 2 liter bottles to recycle as planters. As you can see in the images above, these will be stacked in rows and hung inside of a wooden frame. They told us precisely how this would be constructed, as well as how the water would flow and be collected. The class researched native Illinois plants in zones 5 and 6, gathered data on how much sun shines throughout the day in areas inside and out, and generated a list of plants that could be grown on the ledge in Area68, and then transplanted to the outdoor landscape. There was so much to be impressed with; the cross-curricular connections, the collaboration among teams of students, the level of engagement, and finally the professionalism of their presentation! Well done fourth-graders! Plan APPROVED!! Katie Connelly
