As you may have heard, we have begun a Whole School Read with the theme immigration. We are using books with this theme as class read alouds, so that the whole school has a common understanding of immigration, we are able to discuss it, learn about it, and build a sense of community. As part of this Whole School Read, our 4th and 5th graders went Facets Theater in Lincoln Park to view a series of short films. Prior to attending we did some preparation learning different vocabulary people use when speaking about film, practiced using subtitles, and set a goal for viewing. The films were shown in several different languages, some were animated, some were live-action, but all had an important message about immigration. After the films, we were led in a discussion by the Facets staff, where we shared our thoughts and what we learned. It was an excellent experience for both students and staff!
