Kindergarten began learning about engineering last week. We started by watching a BrainPop video, where Annie and Moby taught us what it means to be an engineer. In the video, Annie and Moby discovered a real life problem...the squirrels were eating all the birdseed from the bird feeder. They brainstormed possible solutions together, drew out their plan, and built it. Their first try did not work, so they tried to improve on that idea! They finally figured out how to stop the pesky squirrels!
After watching the video, we read the book Rosie Revere, Engineer, about a girl with a knack for turning ordinary things into wonderful inventions. Her 'gizmos' often flopped, but we learned that those kinds of mistakes can be celebrated because now you've learned what doesn't work and can try something different! The following week, we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff. We followed what an engineer would do...1) identified the problem, 2) brainstormed solutions, 3) drew out a plan, and 4) built it! They built surf boards and soft shoes for the goats, headphones for the troll, and even boats, rockets, and new bridges! Our Kindergarten did a wonderful job engineering in our D-Lab!
