I was lucky enough to be an observer while Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Salpietro, and Mr. Douglas used our stage area to Skype with a scientist in Antarctica! She was there for several months of what is now the Antarctic summer, living in a tent observing several colonies of penguins. This group of students read and learned about penguins and the Antarctic to generate questions for our scientist contact, Jean. We even saw two skuas, which are penguin predators, approach a colony of penguins Jean was with. Thank goodness they did not suceed in their hunting mission while we were watching, though Jean explained that all animals need to eat and the predator/prey relationship is just part of life. Our students and teachers learned so much from this experience.
