What a great resource! Thank you Skokie Public Library!
Katie Connelly Mrs. Johnson, Mr. Douglas, and Mrs. Salpietro's Devonshire Flag arrived in Antarctica! It has been planted very close to a colony of penguins by our scientist friend that they Skyped with. Jean let us know that before she leaves it will be removed, as it is important that she leave everything just as it was, and not bring anything unnatural into this environment. Thanks to those classes for sharing this experience!

Love this list of books! Click each book to see ideas of how to incorporate design thinking and engineering inspired by characters, setting, and problems. I am happy to help, so check it out and let me know how and when!
Katie Connelly Novel Engineering I was lucky enough to be an observer while Mrs. Johnson, Mrs. Salpietro, and Mr. Douglas used our stage area to Skype with a scientist in Antarctica! She was there for several months of what is now the Antarctic summer, living in a tent observing several colonies of penguins. This group of students read and learned about penguins and the Antarctic to generate questions for our scientist contact, Jean. We even saw two skuas, which are penguin predators, approach a colony of penguins Jean was with. Thank goodness they did not suceed in their hunting mission while we were watching, though Jean explained that all animals need to eat and the predator/prey relationship is just part of life. Our students and teachers learned so much from this experience.
Katie Connelly These are just some of the books in our library that can not only plant the seeds of problem based learning and design thinking, but also illustrate important character traits such as perseverance, focus, courage, and risk taking. Come check them out!
